DIY Solar Power Box Running Low Voltage RGB LED Pathway Lights | Dig-Quad RGB WLED System
Переглядів 8 тис.Рік тому
We are building a DIY solar power box/generator that runs our low voltage outdoor pathway lights year round. Great for areas around the house that are difficult to get power to or have too much shade for regular solar lights. This system is powered by a 12v LiFePO4 battery and has an input for solar panels, the RGB LEDs are run by a Dig-Quad board running WLED. It can run nightly for at least 1...

Thank you for posting this! I have a long driveway through tall trees, so I wanted to use a panel I can elevate to reach the sun, and have a battery pack because I get a lot of low light days here. Came to UA-cam to research how I’d build it and boom! You’ve done all of the legwork and shared it with us! So awesome, many thanks! Happy to be a new subscriber. I’m wanting to add two additional features for my purposes if I can figure them out and would really appreciate any advice you or other viewers might offer. To limit light pollution in a forested area, I’d like to add a motion sensing on switch as cars enter and exit our driveway (ideally for each light independently as a car approaches it, but all on a once is great too), and a also timed shutoff after a minute or two (ideally with a dimmer on and dimmer off)… can anyone offer any suggestions as to how I should go about that? Thanks!
Much appreciated! Yes there are a few different ways to add motion activation especially when using WLED. You probably have two general methods, a standalone method and another method were it's connected to a home automation system like Home Assistant. Here is an example of a more standalone method - ua-cam.com/video/1Qj1jJAam-8/v-deo.html
That is a big project. High cost
Hi there, love your content and fantastic project, it was just what I was looking for. I am going use your project as the basis for my project. Would it be too much to ask you to share a wiring diagram for the board. I'm a novice, so the documentation will be really helpful. One more question. I m planning to up the battery capacity to possibly two amps as I want to support more lights and make the system expandable. So I need to up the charge controller too? I bought the same one you have but think I need to up the amps. I ll have 200 watts of panel to power the batteries
I have been looking all over trying to find someone that has done this with landscape lights and not simply outdoor permanent holiday lights. Id love to talk with you about your project--I want to replace the lamps in my Hampton Bay fixtures with something i can program with WLED. This is wonderful stuff and I'm excited about working through the logistics!
Thank you! Yes it's so nice to have the full control of the look through WLED. Feel free to dm me on our Instagram page @harbecklights
I have Hampton Bay low voltage lights that use very cheap lights and won't display all the colors anymore. I've been looking to upgrade the fixtures to lights I can program with WLED for my own affects. This is exactly what I want to do but I don't have a 3D printer and I'm looking for lights I can drop in and add a data wire to. Any suggestions?
How far apart did you set the lights? And did you have any data issues or voltage drops?
They are about 4 ft apart and no issues with data (I ran 16awg wire). There is some voltage drop but it's not noticeable even at all white.
@@HarbeckLights Another question... is there a trick to getting these things apart? I tried a heat gun and spraying IPA to loosen up the silicon but I am barely getting a nudge out of them...
@@JoeSchmoe24 some are definitely tougher than others. We screwed on the stake onto the bottom also to help pry open the edge a bit to get the alcohol in and then really just used the heat gun to get it good and hot. A screw driver as well judiciously to help pry it open a bit.
@@HarbeckLights thank you. I’m going to give it another try when I can get a second set of hands to help.
No esp32 chip needed?
I'm running these all from a single DigQuad board so no need for esp32 chips on each light. See my DIY Solar Power Box video link in description for more info.
Can you explain why you need the wifi relay? Can't you turn off the lights from wled, the dig-quad?
Correct you can turn off the lights from wled, but even though the lights are not lit the led chips still use a small amount of power (this can add up if you have a lot of pixels). So using the relay cuts off all power usage. It's definitely not necessary to use the relay but saves some power over time.
@@HarbeckLights ah gotcha! Thank you for explaining!
Thank you for using my music! 🤩🎶🔥
Amazing light show sir, WELL DONE!!! Any chance you'd be willing t0 share the audio with a fellow light show guy? Thanks, Shane
Thank you! The audio is just straight from the soundtrack.
@@HarbeckLights ok, thank you.
ok, did you by chance take parts out of the audio? The song from the soundtrack is not exactly the same as in your video, at least that I'm finding. LOL thanks, Shane@@HarbeckLights
Maybe a better question is which song from the movie is being used here? Haha Thanks, Shane
Which home alone movie is this track from? Thanks
I've seen a lot of different pixel light shows, but this is BY FAR the most original and well put together one yet! Props on all the hard work and thought that went into this show. Would love to see it in person!
Wow thank you so much!!! We appreciate that a lot!!! ❤

The only way I would have a chance of 🌥️ winning this game if the game wasn’t so bad is if I was in a league that would have won the league but the other teams were still 🎉playing for me I would win 🥇 this season so much harder 🎉🎉😅😅🎉😅😅🎉😅🎉😅🎉😅🎉😅😂😅🎉😅😅😂😅😅🎉😅🎉😅🎉😅😅🎉😅🎉😅🎉😅🎉😅🎉😅😂😅😂😅😂😅😅🎉😅😮😢😅🎉😮😮😮🎉😅🎉😅🎉😅😅🎉

Haha thank you!
In love with this. Well done with the blending of styles. What are the triangle or maybe pyramid trees to the right of the display. My better half won't stop pointing at them lol.
Thank you so much! Those are our what we call our Bubble Trees - they are made from putting lights inside shipping tubes and then diffusing the lights.

do you have the STL file to 3d print myself?
very cool. Love it, I built something like this to run the outdoor lights on my house.
Thank you! Sounds great!

I’m late to the game, man if you could get this little guy made we’d all buy a Winston the Christmas wisp!!!

This is amazing your so good at doing Christmas lights congratulations on winning that trophies your gonna win another one
Thank you so much!!! We appreciate that!! ❤
This video is amazing keep up the good work
Thank you my friend!! ❤
I love this idea! I’m curious where you bought the box to put everything in? Also I’m curious how would you do this setup without having WiFi accessible?
The box is the DEWALT TSTAK Tool Box and I got it from HD. And for the setup without WiFi, I've seen some people enable a WiFi Hotspot on their phone and then connect WLED device to that hotspot. This allows you to use the app and also the internet on your phone normally.
@@HarbeckLightsYeah! I love that idea. Just have both the WiFi Relay & WiFi Port mounted inside the box, & just control using a hotspot. Thanks!!
Are you using the dig quad to control the relay? It has that functionality built into the board and is supported by WLED. Is there a benefit to putting the regulator behind the Dig Quad and not before it too? Love how compact the build is, we have just installed solar and I want to put something similar together for my holiday lighting and existing WLED setup
I did look into using the dig quad to control the relay and that would have worked just as well. Main reason for the order was to allow the low voltage cutoff to cut off the power to everything including the DigQuad board just as a slight extra precaution even though the DigQuad would not pull hardly anything.
I wish to thank you so much for these videos and the videos of the finished projects. I use to go by your house during this time just to watch your house to see what else you came up with. You never disappointed me. It always made me feel that i was a little kid again! It is sad that i can't be there to see your house all light up in lights. So i watch these to bring a smile to my face. Again thank you for all your hard work! It means a lot! ❤
Thank you so much!!! Really appreciate your kind words and coming by to see the lights! Happy Holidays!!
where. is the DIY video on thise??? you said 3 years. agow you was making. one?

What worked for glue? Thanks for posting!
Thank for the dyi information
So impressive.
I'm not sure why you don't have more views and likes. You videos are awesome. I hope it begins to pay off for you. Subscribed.
Thank you!! Much appreciated!!
May I know how much is th3 cost to setup the whole system.?
It's definitely not the cheapest build but considering you can install this anywhere without having to run long wires from an outlet it's pretty good. The battery is the biggest cost around $120, but if you wait until some holiday sales you can get some good deals. I ended up spending around $350 since I had some of the wires and lights already but ymmv.
Pls share the LED description/link.

Really like the video. This project and others on your channel are things I could see myself doing. As others have mentioned adding a parts list would be really beneficial, even if that list doesn't list the exact parts you used, just something to get us to know what to look for.
